On 1 October, gas and electricity prices will rise by 10% under the new energy price cap. That means the average household (paying by direct debit) can expect to spend £1,717 a year on energy bills. However, the amount you pay will depend on your exact energy use.
Here are some top energy-saving tips:
- Bleed your radiators.
- Turn down radiators in rooms that you aren’t using.
- Get a smart meter to keep an eye on your energy use.
- Draught excluders can help to stop heat escaping under your doors and keep you warm.

- other household essentials.
The Household Support Fund was due to finish at the end of September but it's now been extended until March 2025. Support is available through your local council and each has different rules for eligibility and what's available.
