Apprentices at Futures were invited to Derby College for a special ministerial visit yesterday to celebrate its national recognition as a technical college.
Many of our apprentices complete their apprenticeships through Derby college, which has now been recognised as a Construction Technical Excellence College – the only one in the East Midlands and just one of ten in the UK. This means the college will receive more funding to support thousands more young people into the construction industry.
Lee Pratt, Assets Health & Safety Manager at Futures was invited to the event due to being Chair of the Employee Skills Board at Derby College, along with our CEO, Tim Mulvenna and some of our apprentices.
To mark the occasion, Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson was shown around the campus and spoke to some of our young people completing their apprenticeships at Futures.
Lee said: “We’ve been working very closely with Derby College for many years now, so it was great to be invited along and join them in celebrating this achievement.
"Two of our apprentices were asked to show their skills to the Secretary of State by plastering a ceiling. I think most people could have found this a bit daunting, but they grabbed the opportunity with both hands and excelled in producing some outstanding work. They even then had a lengthy chat with her, singing their praises for Futures and how we work.
“Apprentices can start at Futures in various trades, including electrical, carpentry and painting and decorating, so this recognition really evidences the high-quality of training our apprentices receive.”
