Memorial bench installed for Kilburn stalwart

A memorial to a Kilburn stalwart who lost her battle with cancer in July has been installed for the community.

The bench, in memory of childminder Gemma Brown, sits across from the park in Brown Close, Kilburn, when Gemma was a frequent visitor.

Installed by Futures Greenscape the bench has been gifted to the community by Gemma’s family, as a way of celebrating the life of their daughter, sister and wife.

Kirsty McKay, Gemma’s sister, said: “Gemma was loved by the community so much and had such an impact on everyone.

“The bench is more for the community rather than for our family. Everyone knew her, she spent time with different groups and at different parks. It feels fitting that mums can sit and watch children play in the park where she used to take the children.”

At the age of 32 Gemma was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer, Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Despite chemotherapy and operations, the cancer continued to spread so Gemma and her family started to fundraise for more experimental treatments.

#TeamBrown raised more than £33,000 for alternative treatment, but sadly Gemma passed away on 25 July.

Inscribed ‘In loving memory of Gemma Brown’ the memorial bench also features #TeamBrown to remind and thank the Kilburn community for their kindness and support.

Wayne Green, Head of Futures Greenscape, said: “We were humbled to be asked by Kirsty to help family, friends and neighbours to remember Gemma in this way.”

Family and friends have continued to fundraise in Gemma’s name to help others in similar situations or to support causes she would have helped with.

“The money we have raised now we are putting towards causes she would have liked – like people who are in the same position as her.”
