Futures’ finance assistant could be crowned best newcomer

A history and politics graduate is up for an accountancy award, just 18 months after joining the numbers game.

Claire Jennings, Investment Assistant for Futures Housing Group, has been shortlisted in the best newcomer category of the Housing Association National Accountancy (HANA) awards.
The 23-year-old said: “If you had told me when I started that I would working in accountancy and enjoying it I wouldn’t have believed you.
“I am very pleased and excited to be shortlisted, it’s a nice feeling to know that it’s not just people at work who recognise what you do, especially in the relatively short time I have been here.”
Claire joined Futures as a graduate in September 2015 with a desire to work in the charity or housing sector, but without a passion for numbers.
After dipping her toes into the world of finance and accountancy, Claire is now working towards accountancy qualifications and has plans to continue working in the field.
“I’m doing accountancy training so definitely want to still be in the housing because of the social purpose, you know what you’re doing and it’s not about making money.
“Didn’t realise the variation of what housing associations cover with all the crucial things we do. Charities are just like any other business, but with a social ambition.”
Sangita Surridge, Finance Director at Futures, said: ““It has been fascinating to watch Claire over the last 18 months, through her own hard work and excellent guidance from colleagues she has developed into an independent, integral member of the finance team.”
The East Midlands housing association will be doubly represented at the awards, having also been shortlisted in the best risk management category.
Johnny Keen, Risk and Compliance Manager, added: “It’s quite humbling to be nominated and shortlisted. Managing risk in any organisation is an ongoing challenge, especially with the emergence of cybercrime which is now a daily threat and the need for ongoing compliance with changing regulation.
“We’ve improved our approach to risk management over the last couple of years including analysing where our gaps are and how we rate risks to our business. While it’s great to be recognised nationally, there is still work to do to ensure the business always protects itself.”

The HANA awards are organised by the National Housing Federation to recognise social housing finance teams and individuals. Winners will be announced on July 6.
