Joint effort boosts employability skills in Derbyshire

Three Derbyshire organisations are working together to tackle unemployment by introducing an employability skills workshop to help get job seekers ready for work.

Futures Housing Group, training Provider Access Training and Alfreton Jobcentre have joined forces to lay on the course where attendees can earn a City and Guilds level one qualification in employability skills.

The latest course saw six people attend a week-long workshop, which helps attendees with their self-confidence, CV writing, teamwork skills, approaches to job seeking and interview preparation.

Course attendee Keaton Lambert, 18, from Selston, Nottinghamshire, said: “The main reason for me to be on the course was to boost my confidence, and it has really helped with that.

“Everyone on the course; the other learners and the tutors, was really friendly. No one laughed if you got anything wrong and that really helped me.

Since attending the course, Keaton has been in with touch a builders’ firm to get his construction career moving.

Keaton said: “I’ve always wanted to get a hands-on job and to work outdoors. This is the first chance I’ve had to do something like this so I’m absolutely pleased with the way it’s all gone.”

“These courses, which are not just for our customers, can be the first step towards a brilliant career or someone finding their true calling. We’re delighted to extend this support to anyone who needs it.”

Corrina Hembury, Managing Director at Access Training said: “We work with people of all ages to support them into work and up the career ladder and these courses are a fantastic way for local job seekers to improve their skills.

“We’re thrilled with the positive feedback from the attendees and look forward to running more programmes in the future.”
